Britbuys 2006 comp Final in Spain...As written by Martin
Added: Tuesday, 10th October 2006

Kristy at the International final in Benidorm. Our UK final winner representing the NY Exchange Bar, Ipswich. Kristy never had much time to prepare for this final arriving with less than 24 hours until the show was due to start, and in that time she also

The news of the running order also set in as she was drawn number 13. I assured her it was a better place to be in than if she had been drawn number one as she was one of 24 in the International final.
Well Sunday 24th September had arrived, and a very nervous Kristy and the girls from Ipswich, had already found their seats in the Benidorm Palace that afternoon before I had even left my Hotel, not bad for someone who was a 40 min drive away from her villa, to my less than 10 min walk from the Hotel. I bet she's not as keen to get to work on a Monday morning.
I think she was a little relieved to see familiar faces as Mel and I walked in to the theatre to give her some extra support and well wishes, even though we would be on stage taking part as well as helping out with the running of the show.
After the setting up and sound checks had been done there was only an hour to go before the show was to begin, and I took some time out to have a chat with Kristy and the girls, to try and help her relax, settle the nerves, and build for the competition.
To which it was not long that Sam realized that she did not have long to convince them that stuffing food would be a good thing to do to pass the time, Oh and as much alcohol as they could get in before the show. ( lol typical Suffolk philosophy )
Well the time had passed and we started the show with all the Britbuys teams on the stage including Mel and myself, and I gave a very big mention for our very own Leyla and of course the number one Karaoke "Klowns"back in the UK.
After singing the opening song with the teams I remained on stage and gave the Benidorm crowd a brief insight to how our competition was run and its climax at the corn exchange, Oh and another mention to all the peeps in Ipswich and of course Leyla and our own Klowns Karaoke team (well it had to be done lol). I then sang my song and introduced Ian and Juliet to the stage, and after we made a presentation the competition was on its way.
As it was in the UK, the competition was split into 3 groups of eight, Kristy was in the second group so that gave me just enough time to go back stage and wish her good luck and give a few pointers, she also had a text come in from Leyla wishing her well, which I know helped as Kristy was now eager to take the stage.
I made my way back out to the front of stage so as I could cheer her on as well to make a nearly full house notice the noise that 5 people from Suffolk could make.
Kristy's name was called, She came onto the stage and announced that she would rock her song all the way back to Suffolk for the guys at home.
And she lived up to that statement giving us a good performance of the same song (weak) that won her the place to be at the international final here in Benidorm.
She clearly impressed the judges and made the most of what is the largest stage in the world, by rocking her way round with what seemed a new lease of confidence, using the massive stage to her advantage.
To be fair she went for it, with a what the hell attitude I'm here and you are gonna know it, and know it they did.
When the results came in she had tears rolling down her face as she so desperately wanted to bring something home for all the guys in Ipswich and thought she had let us down.
How far off the mark could she have been?
With her sister and her two mates by her side, Mel and I came over to her and gave her the news, You see for someone to go into a competition in another town is hard enough, but to go to another country as a virtual stranger with minimum support and the odds stacked against her, up against 24 other finalists is a mountain to climb.
But we were all so proud of her as she did well to finish in 6th place, And that in its self is an achievement.
So when you all see Kristy next time give her a big pat on the back (mind the sunburn though) and let her know that she did us proud..

Be safe all see ya when I'm back in uk

Regards Martin
